This table confuses me!

The CL1A was used on the 5c and 10c Rivadavia in 1939.
If that is the 'granulado vertical' there should not be a 1c issue.

The CL1B was used in 1943 on the 30c, 1p, 2p, 20p.
This has to be the 'grueso.'
It looks like Bardi is correct and that the 40c early clay is not CL1B.

I will look closely at my 40c dark color clays. I have several on cover.

The CL1B was also used on the 1c, 5c, 10c Rivadavia in 1943.
If that is the 'Grueso' there should not be a 20c Toro, which was used in 1951+.

I need to study the 5c San Martin red on clay paper to better understand the 10c clays 'rayado vertical' and 'tela.'
These are the intermediate clay paper I need to study also for the 40c dark clay and the CL2A.

The 'delgado' is the CL2B, and I agree with 10c to 2p, but not the 1c and 5c.
The 1c and 5c Moreno clays went out of circulation in the mid 1940s.

In summary, the following papers do not make sense:

'granulado vertical' 1c
'grueso' 20c
'delgado' 1c and 5c

There may be a new clay paper and that is the one used on the 40c dark colors clay.

This table omits the CL3, the thick clay paper used in the 1950s for the 25c 'Servicio Oficial.'

http://stampcollectingroundup.blogspot.com/2009/11/philately-goes-online.html Philately Goes Online http://stampcollectingroundup.blogspot.com/2009/11/philately-goes-online.html The Times of India reports,"From being a quaint hobby nurtured by being friends with the postman, asking relatives and pen pals to send stamps from abroad or by simply buying them from postal bureaus, philately has mostly gone online. Earlier, philatelic research involved many trips to museums, subscribing to stamp magazines and catalogues and a great deal of letter writing. But the internet has changed the way philatelists and collectors of postal paraphernalia go about pursuing their passion. In the process, it has attracted many young collectors."

Reporter Shreya Roy Chowdhury writes, "Even casual collectors like 27-year-old Ganesh Bhausaheb Potphode have become serious philatelists courtesy the net. Potphode, who lives in Saudi Arabia started off simply collecting all kinds of stamps when he was in high school. Once he started using the net, philately went from being just a hobby to becoming an all-consuming pursuit. Potphode has undertaken some serious cramming to learn philatelic terms, gathered information on specific stamps and started a blog dedicated to his collection.

Chowdhury goes on to say, "A keen stamp collector for about 50 years and editor of Stanley Gibbons catalogues and magazines, Hugh Jeffries too feels the internet can never replace the pleasure of talking directly to fellow stamp collectors or making purchases across a counter. He believes that ferreting out information published in books that have long been out of print and journals dating back several centuries and exploring museums and specialist libraries, are far more enriching than checking online catalogues."

Shown above a 1997 stamp from Palau showing Donald Duck and his nephews doing some research on the Internet - all of whom are no doubt stamp collectors.

I'm waiting for my flight to Montreal and then to Paris. This is a pitty that during last week spent in Chicago and Ottawa I could not find any time to visit a post office in order to buy some stamps ! May be next time...)

As an echo to my yesterday post showing stamps from Uruguay, I'm glad today to share with you my first cover received from this country ! This cover was used by an Ebay seller to send me some stamps that I purchased and it is franked with three full souvenir sheets.

The souvenir sheet used on the cover was issued on the 10th of July 2008 to commemorate the International Polar Year. A lot of countries have issued stamps or souvenir sheets at this occasion. Uruguay has chosen to illustrate the issue with fauna and flora from the Antarctic region.
The stamp located in the top right corner of the sheet pictures a pair of Brown sjuas (Catharacta lonnbergii) while the other stamp pictured a pair of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella). This seal takes its scientific name from the German vessel SMS Gazelle which collected the first specimen from Kerguelen island. This species of seal is also knwon as Kerguelen Fur Seals and is a protected species.
The rest of the souvenir shete pictures local fauna and an iceberg.
The sheets are cancelled with a black rectangular cancel, a shape which seems rather common for South American postal administrations!

My collection of covers from the world is increasing with one additional country !

Name: Sri Lanka Army - Diamond Jubilee
Date of Issue: 10 October 2009

Sri Lank Army, born on 10th October 1949 marks its sixty years of age (Diamond Jubilee) on 10th October 2009 with pride and dignity following the great victory recorded with the elimination of terrorism which prevailed over three decades. The Army, in retrospect has reached its unparalleled greatness through its unfailing determination, dedication, dignity and pride right throughout its sixty years of existence.

The Army founded in 1949 with a limited group of people is now composed of six Security Forces Headquarters, five Forward Maintenance Areas, fourteen Divisions, six Task Force Headquarters, sixty-four Brigades, seven Area Headquarters, two Sub Area Headquarters and twenty-three Regiments.

The Army goes into the annals of military history this year because of its unmatched and glorious victory over the scourge of ruthless LTTE terrorism that posed a threat to the country's unitary nature and territorial integrity and disrupted the peaceful co-existence of all ethnicities for over thirty years, though the peak of fighting against terrorism took place between the period 1999 - 2009.

Heroic soldiers of the Army at the expense of their own precious lives and limbs brought peace to the entire Sri Lanka and unified the Nation under one flag through "Victory through Sacrifice", Therefore the commemoration of the Army Day (October 10th) and its 60th Anniversary at this juncture inspires us greatly. The issue of a new stamp by the Department of posts at Army Headquarters to coincide with this golden landmark, signals the undeniable face that we have re-created a new milieu for our younger generation where they could live in peace and happiness.

The reason is that three weeks ago I have starting a new job, within the same company, that kept me very busy. A lot of new things to learn, a lot of new people to meet. This new job is going to give me the chance to travel even more than before: this week I have been two days in Chicago, I’m currently writing this (short) post from Ottawa and in three weeks I will be traveling to Shanghai and Beijing. I should also go to Bangalore… This is exciting but it keeps me away from stamps and from you, the readers of my blog, which is a pity. I missed you and I hope that you missed me a bit ;-) ).

This year we have seen the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. I think there is no need to introduce Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), he is very famous. His book “Origin of Species” published in 1859 is also very famous. This anniversary has been the occasion for a lot of postal administration to issue stamps to celebrate this event. Today I would like to show you two stamps issued by Uruguay on the 31st of August 2009.
I guess you understand why I’m interested by these stamps: they are printed in sheet with a margin that is illustrated with a frog! Even if the frog is not pictured on the stamps themselves, I will keep this set for my frog collection!
The stamp on the left pictures a very famous portrait of Darwin, at the end of his life, and a not less famous drawing illustrating the evolution theory from the ape to the human being.
The stamp on the right pictures the HMS beagle, the ship of which Darwin made a five years trip during which he made a lot of observation leading to his theory of the natural selection.

Hi ! Here is the latest cover received by me from France showing famous French Cartoon characters by great artist, Hansi. These are very popular in France. David Jastrzebski has sent me this cover with more info about the creator of these cartoon characters which is given below. Hansi, the versartile creator, produced numerous motives for dishes, for stained glass, for dolls, for posters, for commercial labels, for ex--libris, for menus, for programs, for books and about 400 picture postcards. There is a Hansi museum in France with the art work by Hansi. Thanks David ! For this beautiful cover with nice cancellation of Hansi! This is all for Today ! Till Next Post ….Have a Nice Time !…

Picture 020

The famous Hansi was born on February 23, 1873, in Colmar, that means in Alsace, but under German occupation. As of the age of 10 years, constrained to attend the " Reichsland's school ", the young boy points out by his taste for the drawing and his critical spirit which prevent him from submitting himself to the discipline and make a bad pupil of him. In order to be able to attend the "Ecole des Beaux Arts " of Lyon, he turns to a career as draughtsman. Whereas he would have preferred to dedicate himself to the carving he works out by need as draftsman in Cernay's, Mulhouse's , then Logelbach's textile industries. At the same time, he continues to improve his technique of painting and practises etching and the watercolour. At this time, the first picture postcards are put on the market in Austria and Germany before appearing in France.

Musée HANSI - Riquewihr

In 1907, he publishes under Hansi's pen name, a series of boards in an collection entitled " Vogesenbilder " (Images of the Vosges) which meets a sharp success. He realizes with the publisher Max Wettig several series of watercolours cards representing landscapes. He publishes until 1914 several literary works (among which the very known " Professor Knatschke ") in a spirit of anti-Germanic satire. Numerous cards signed Hansi and representing charming Alsatian children in enchanting and bucolic settings are published by the editor " La Cigogne ". Due to this graphic means of expression, he becomes one of the symbols of the Alsatian resistance to Germany. His satirical vein brought him several condemnations in front of the German courts.

dessin HANSI

In 1914, Hansi enlists in the French army and one finds him on several picture postcards photographed in military dress. After the war, he publishes a lot of illustrated books which do not meet any more the same success. Some of their illustrations are reproduced in the form of postcards. He realizes also posters for the " Alsace and Lorraine's railroads " duplicated in four picture postcards. In 1923, Jean Jacques Waltz succeeds his father at the post of curator of the " Unterlinden's Museum " in Colmar and works on the heraldic art.

dessin HANSI

Between 1923 and 1933, the "Alsace' Potassium Hydroxides' Company "order him advertising cards which are published at Braun's in Mulhouse Dornach. Hansi puts so his draftsman's talents on the service of the advertisement. But the second world war breaks out. Hansi, henceforth known as spearhead of the anti-Germanic fight, whose cards popularized the ideas through Germany and whole France, has to take refuge in Agen. After a long journey, weakened, sick and demoralized, Hansi, exiles himself in Switzerland. In 1946, he ends finally up in his native town Colmar. He still publishes menus, illustrated books and some cards. On June 10, 1951, Jean Jacques Waltz dies at the age of 78, The artist leaves with his country an immense cultural and artistic treasure.

FDC NAME:20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Child(CRC)
Issue Date:09th October 2009.
Details:2009 is the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This legally binding treaty calls on all citizens of the world, from its leaders to each and every one of us to live up to our duties to ensure every child survives and thrives, free from hunger, want, neglect and abuse.

The CRC demands from every one of us, as part of a caring society, to place children at the heart of human development. Not only because this offers a strong return on our investment; nor because of the vulnerability of childhood calls upon our compassion; but rather because that is every child's right.

Five stamps with FDC was issued the details denominations are:
1.30sen: Right to Play
Play and participation are critical rights for every child. It facilitates creativity, individuality and social, physical and intellectual growth. There are children however who are deprived of play due to conflict, disease and exploitation. Building safe social and physical environment must be a priority so all children can play and develop into caring citizens free to participate in shaping their own societies.
2.30sen: Right to FoodEvery child born into this world has a right to survive. Nutritious food and clean water are amongst the most essential needs to ensure a child's good health to develop mentally and physically. Universal and sustainable food security is part and parcel of protecting this right for children and their families.
3.30sen: Right to Learn
The ABCs are the beginning of a brighter future for every child. The opportunity to learn and benefit from development must be the right of all children, regardless of gender, ethnicity, economic background, disability, citizenship or HIV status. Only when every single child is able to read and write, can we truly begin to reduce poverty and guarantee true human progress for all communities.
4.30sen: Right to Protection
Every child has the right to grow up safe, free from abuse, neglect, exploitation and discrimination. Yet many experience violence in their childhood, their homes and families, schools, care systems and communities. Giving our children a happy childhood is only possible when society unites to openly confront violence and to defend children's right to protection.
5.RM1: Born with Rights
Children are the seeds of a country's future. For them to grow and realize the fullest potential, a conducive environment for their development and growth must first be set in place. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) helps create this environment for children aged 18 and below by setting the standards for their health care, education , as well as legal, civil and social services.

And although translating the vision and values of the CRC into reality is chiefly the government's responsibility, society as a whole is also responsible for realizing the CRC's objectives. Parents, teachers, health workers, advocates and even children themselves, play crucial roles every day to protect and guarantee the rights of all children.

To ensure that children are accorded their rights as enshrined in the CRC, Article 45 of the CRC itself mandates that UNICEF play the most important role of all; Help foster the implementation of the rights of the child.

EBay has started to send automated "payment reminders" to buyers who did not pay their seller. No big deal you think? Think again, eBay starts sending them after only 48 hours!
So you bought let's say 10 items from a seller and are waiting for another auction ending in 7 days? You will receive 10 of these nice reminders after 48 hours, and more coming your way if you didn't pay after 96 hours!

Sellers cannot opt out of the first wave of reminders, they can only opt out for the second waves. But believe me, most sellers are not even aware of this new "improvement". So their buyers will be receiving quite a lot of useless of reminders.

In my opinion, buyers may feel harassed and this can lead to even more problems for the sellers.

Leave communication tools into the sellers hands.

Hi ! In today's Post some recent stamps on Charles Darwin issued by Gibraltar on 17th November to commemorate his 200th Birth Anniversary. The stamps are in classic Black & White photos of Darwin with his famous books. The stamps are most exclusive in design than the stamps issued so far on Charles Darwin as these stamps feature the work of Darwin which created landmark in the field of Biology. This is all for today...Till Next Post...Have a Nice Time !...

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist who realised and presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, through the process he called natural selection. The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and much of the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, providing logical explanation for the diversity of life.

The Gibraltar Darwin 200th Anniversary issue is comprised of 4 stamps and a miniature sheet all dedicated to some of his most important books. His 1859 book 'On the Origin of Species' established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. He examined human evolution and sexual selection in 'The Descent of Man', and 'Selection in Relation to Sex', followed by 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals'. His research on plants was published in a series of books, and in his final book, he examined earthworms and their effect on soil.

The stamp and First Day Cover commemorating the European Championship in Women’s Volleyball both feature a drawing depicting the dynamics of the players’ movements.

Volley Ball

The popular game known as volleyball originates from the United States. The rules were laid down in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher from YMCA, and have since then evolved to include changes and modifications under the approval of FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) in order to make the game ever more dynamic and attractive for the spectators. Initially the score was won only after the given team’s own service and the matches sometimes took as long as 4 hours. Nowadays, with each rally bringing a score, the game usually takes only two hours. Two teams of six players compete against each other and the game is carried on until one of them scores 3 sets . The players are allowed to hit the ball three times before returning it to the opponent’s half. In 1998 an additional player was introduced called “libero", who can only play in defense. All the other players rotate between the positions of setter, middle blocker, outside hitter and opposite hitter. European Championships in Women’s Volleyball were first held in 1949. Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964.

An interesting fact

Beach volleyball is a younger sister of the traditional volleyball. It is also an Olympic sport (it has been one since 1996), however its rules are slightly different and the teams consist of only two players. Nevertheless, both sports fall under the authority of the same sports associations

For example, the 25c1E1 is a dark pink and very much unlike the 25c1E3a. The 1E1 is cream BEFORE discoloration. If you have a 1E3a that is discolored in such a way as to resemble the 1E1, then it is time to take a look at the color of the stamp. In some cases, you will be stuck with a 1E3a that just looks like a 1E1 or viceversa, but because most 1E3a are not discolored, most of the time there isn't a classification problem.

http://fdc4all.blogspot.com/2009/11/60th-anniversary-of-founding-of-peoples.html 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China FDC from HONGKONG http://fdc4all.blogspot.com/2009/11/60th-anniversary-of-founding-of-peoples.html
FDC Name:60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China.
Issue Date:1st OCT'2009
Details:Founded on 1 October 1949, the People's Republic of China celebrates her 60th anniversary this year. Over the past 60 years, China has amazed the world with her remarkable success in development. While looking back with pride at our numerous accomplishments, all Chinese people strive for an even brighter tomorrow.
To mark this memorable moment, Hongkong Post issues a set of commemorative stamps. The set of six stamps is designed based on the winning entry of the Stamp Design Competition for the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China jointly organised by the Home Affairs Bureau, Radio Television Hong Kong, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and the Commission on Youth.
  • Victoria Harbour and Tiananmen Square depicted on two interlocking cogwheels ($1.40), and the
  • five-star national flag flying by the side of the "Forever Blooming Bauhinia" ($1.80), symbolize the intimate and inseparable bond between Hong Kong and our Motherland.
  • The Bird's Nest ($2.40) reminds us of the country's first hosting of the Olympic Games
  • while the successful launch of China's manned spacecraft Shenzhou-7 ($2.50) marks her rapid technological advancement and development.
  • The Temple of Heaven against the backdrop of an illuminated globe ($3) and
  • a golden dragon soaring above the Great Wall ($5) signify the nation's rising economic and international status.
The six stamps also fit into a perfect ring on the mini sheet with the accompanying number "6", bringing out the theme of the 60th anniversary.
Remark:Nice FDC with odd shape stamps set.The design of stamps are excellent. The souvenir sheet was great but my friend has sent the FDC with stamps only.

S. Philatelic Classics Society http://joehahnphilatelyblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/u-s-philatelic-classics-society.html

I just returned from viewing the exhibits on display at the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, 4th Annual Postal History Symposium held at the American Philatelic Building in Bellefonte, PA.

As many of the readers of this blog know, I do not collect U.S. stamps at all although I have done so in the past. I am a life member of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society (RA818) so I do have some knowledge of these issues.

I do not know enough superlatives to adequately describe what I saw. There were so many, unique, only one known, one of two known, one of three known, largest known multiple, etc. that I can not mention them all.

I do enjoy seeing rare and unusual material from anywhere and virtually most of the aristocrats of U.S. classic material were on display. Anyone, who viewed the exhibits and walked away with out being astounded, is in my opinion not a true philatelist.

I am sure that the only venue where you may see such an array of outstanding U.S. classic material would be at an international exhibition.

I want to thank the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society for holding the symposium, the exhibitors for sharing their collections, and the American Philatelic Society for hosting the event. I shall remember this experience as long as I live.

I am very happy to share with you the latest one that I got : a red cancel picturing a frog !

The red cancel is from Matsuo Post Office, Iwate prefecture. The date of the cancel 57.11.10 represents the 10th of November 1982, the 57th year of the Emperor's reign!
The frof pictured on the cancel is a living national treasure of Japan, meaning a protected animal.
