    7 Nov 2009 | 12:01 am
UK's Daily Mail reports documents reveal comic Benny Hill was dumped from a set of Royal Mail stamps because of concerns about his "saucy" style.According to the paper, "Slapstick, burlesque and double entendre were always his hallmark. Some critics accused the show of sexism but Hill maintained that the female characters kept their dignity while the men chasing them were portrayed as buffoons."The article went on to say, "Royal Mail deemed that his jokes were in direct opposition to the company's policies on harassment in the work place."A set of six stamps were issued in September 2005 to…

Cats are wonderful companions. Generally they are intelligent, affectionate and sensitive. The evolution of the cat began millions of years ago and today’s domestic cat may be a descendant of a wild African cat the Egyptians tamed perhaps as early as 3,500 B.C. By about 1500 B.C cats were sacred to the Egyptian goddess Pasht or Bastet – some sources think the name ‘puss’ is derived from the goddess’ name. The British Postal Museum & Archive has a an interesting post on electronic mail historically – The Post Office and British Broadcasting. Not many people would associate the Post Office with broadcasting, but until 1922 it held a monopoly on electronic mass communication. When telegraphy, and later, the telephone were developed, the Post Office argued that it controlled anything which involved delivery from a sender to a receiver. Telegraph and telephone switching stations were defined as electrical post offices, with the messages or calls regarded as electronic letters. Posted in…

Some of our readers may not be not familiar with terms used to describe graphic images or their properties, so let’s define some of these image terms in plain English. Image Format Photographic images with colors/shades which blend into each other are best displayed in the ‘joint photographic experts group’ (jpg) format. ‘Tagged image file format’ (tiff) is good for photographic images as well, but the file sizes are very large and in most cases prohibitive. The older format of ‘device…
